Canadiens chart quiet offseason with cap space and draft depth

The Canadiens enter the 2026 offseason with $9.2 million in projected cap space after reaching the Conference Finals.

Retaining the RFAs sets the foundation

Kirby Dach, Zach Bolduc and Arber Xhekaj all require new contracts as restricted free agents. Dach posted consistent middle-six production while Bolduc added secondary scoring depth and Xhekaj logged heavy third-pair minutes on the penalty kill. Retaining all three preserves the core that advanced past the second round for the first time since 2021. Losing any one of them would force an immediate replacement search in a thin free-agent market.

The three players combine for roughly $6 million in current cap hits. Re-signing them at modest raises fits comfortably inside the projected $9.2 million space. General manager Kent Hughes can therefore complete these deals before free agency opens on July 1 without sacrificing other priorities.

One veteran defenseman fills the remaining gap

The Canadiens lack a proven third-pair veteran who can mentor younger blueliners and stabilize the penalty kill. Adding one such player on a short-term, low-dollar deal uses the leftover cap space after the RFA signings. This move addresses the specific weakness exposed during the Conference Finals series against the Hurricanes.

Patrik Laine’s unrestricted free-agent status creates no roster hole because his production had already shifted to a depth role. The organization therefore directs resources toward defense rather than forward depth.

Eight draft picks provide long-term flexibility

The Canadiens hold a first-round pick, a second-round pick, a third-round pick, two fourth-round picks including one from Winnipeg, a sixth-round pick and two seventh-round picks including one from Carolina. This haul supplies immediate trade chips or future roster depth. Hughes can use mid-round selections to acquire established players if the free-agent market fails to deliver a suitable veteran defenseman.

The combination of cap space, RFA retention and draft assets allows Montreal to avoid overpaying in free agency. The measured approach maintains competitive window flexibility for the next two seasons.

The Canadiens will either lock in Dach, Bolduc and Xhekaj or open a hole that one of their eight 2026 draft picks must fill within two years.
