Hischier Extension Talks Signal Devils Stability While Kuemper and Jenner Eye Free Agency

Preliminary extension talks between New Jersey GM Sunny Mehta and Nico Hischier’s agent began this month after the Devils captain’s $7.25 million cap hit expires in 2027.

Hischier Negotiations Move From Speculation to Substance

Mehta took over as Devils general manager this spring and immediately prioritized a contract extension for the 27-year-old center. Hischier had remained noncommittal last month when asked about future discussions under new leadership, yet the tone shifted once Mehta was in place.

Pierre LeBrun reported that early conversations between Mehta and agent Allain Roy were amicable and positive, though still in a delicate stage. The Devils GM seeks clarity on Hischier’s long-term intentions before the 2026-27 campaign begins.

An extension appears the likeliest path, but Mehta is unlikely to enter next season with the captain on an expiring deal. Re-signing Hischier will require an annual average value above $12 million on a long-term pact.

New Jersey projects more than $47 million in cap space for 2027-28, providing ample room even after potential commitments to restricted free agent Simon Nemec. Trading veteran defenseman Dougie Hamilton this summer could further offset any short-term pressure.

Kuemper Likely Stays in Los Angeles Despite Backup Role

Darcy Kuemper, 36, enters the final year of his contract carrying a $5.25 million cap hit. Eric Stephens noted that the Kings view the veteran goalie as almost certain to remain despite losing the starting job to Anton Forsberg this season.

Kuemper holds a 10-team no-trade list that limits immediate movement. Speculation about a trade surfaced after his demotion, yet Stephens sees a possible comeback candidate role instead.

The Kings could still place Kuemper on the market next season given the thin supply of experienced starting goalies available via trade or free agency. Monitoring his situation remains prudent for teams seeking veteran depth.

Jenner Heads Toward Unrestricted Free Agency on July 1

Boone Jenner, 32, completes a four-year, $3.75 million AAV contract and becomes an unrestricted free agent July 1. He has spent his entire 13-season NHL career with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Aaron Portzline reported that nothing is settled and re-signing with Columbus remains possible. Management has not made retaining the forward a priority, however, opening the door for other suitors.

If Jenner hits the open market, his combination of size, leadership and playoff experience will draw interest from multiple clubs seeking bottom-six stability.
