Five years of measured visibility

Prokop recorded 11 points in those 42 games after signing a one-year AHL deal with the Edmonton Oilers affiliate on August 11 2025.

He first announced he was gay in July 2021 at age 19 while still a Nashville Predators prospect drafted 73rd overall in 2020.

The announcement generated no negative comments on social media and drew support from other NHL teams general managers and players according to his interview with The Hockey News.

Prokop initially treated the response as unexpected pressure yet later reframed it as a deliberate responsibility he chose when he decided to come out.

He has since played for seven teams across the WHL ECHL and AHL and reports that every teammate group has been supportive once they saw he uses the same hockey language they do.

No other player under an NHL contract has come out in the intervening five years.

Prioritizing self while remaining visible

Prokop described long nights at age 19 when he tried to answer every message while still figuring out his professional path.

He now sets stricter boundaries around his time yet still makes space to be visible for those who reach out.

The approach contrasts with the initial year after coming out when he felt compelled to help every person who contacted him.

His 2025-26 season with Bakersfield followed a heart-condition diagnosis and surgery the prior year that required medical attention away from the rink.

Despite the added off-ice demands Prokop finished the campaign as a regular on the Condors blue line without missing extended time.

The documentary as public record

The Hockey Player directed by Jacqueline Doorey follows the five-year span from his 2021 announcement through the 2025-26 season.

It world-premiered at Frameline50 in San Francisco on June 20 2026 with additional screenings in Edmonton on June 26 and Toronto on June 28 before streaming release on June 29.

Prokop has stated that hockey is ready for more players to come out yet understands why others may hesitate given the added attention.

He remains the only openly gay man under an NHL contract as of June 2026.

The film records both his on-ice development and the internal process of turning responsibility into routine rather than burden.
