John Chayka cleared $5 million in cap space by trading Joseph Woll and Simon Benoit to Philadelphia for Samuel Ersson and Emil Andrae on June 17.

New leadership installs playoff mandate
Mats Sundin joined the organization as Senior Executive Advisor of Hockey Operations the same week Chayka was named general manager. Sundin and Chayka stated publicly that the goal is to return the club to the playoffs immediately. The pair replaced the prior regime with a mandate that prioritizes optionality over long-term rebuilding.
Jim Hiller was named head coach on June 17, completing the front-office reset before the draft. Hiller’s appointment followed the trade that added defenseman Emil Andrae and goaltender Samuel Ersson. The new staff now controls both draft strategy and roster construction.
The $5 million cap relief directly expands the July 1 free-agent budget. Chayka indicated during his introductory press availability that no commitment had been made on Ersson’s qualifying offer. Ersson’s qualifying offer sits between $1.4 million and $1.6 million while his arbitration case could reach $3 million.
Draft capital and asset flexibility
The Maple Leafs hold the first overall selection in the 2026 NHL Draft scheduled for June 26. Elliotte Friedman told SiriusXM NHL Network Radio that the team is expected to select Gavin McKenna. Friedman added that the cap-clearing trade leaves Toronto positioned for further moves.
Friedman stated on the broadcast that the organization should be expected to pursue additional transactions in the coming weeks. The retained flexibility stems from the decision not to commit to Ersson at this stage. Multiple scenarios remain open, including flipping Ersson for another asset or declining to extend a qualifying offer.
The trade also brought in Emil Andrae, who is projected to fill a bottom-pair role immediately. Andrae’s addition addresses depth on the blue line while the forward group awaits further reshaping. Chayka emphasized that retaining Auston Matthews remains the central long-term priority.
Remaining cap and roster decisions
The $5 million gain creates room to address both the blue line and forward group before training camp. Chayka has not ruled out using the first overall pick as a trade chip if the right offer materializes. Every indication from the new front office points toward an aggressive approach through the end of June.
Philadelphia acquired a backup goaltender in Woll and added physicality with Benoit. Toronto received two players under team control and immediate cap relief. The differing needs of both clubs produced the deal that now gives Chayka additional runway.
Further activity will determine whether Ersson stays or departs before free agency opens. The Maple Leafs’ payroll picture will shift again once the draft concludes and July 1 negotiations begin.
