Toronto Maple Leafs hired Jim Hiller as their 41st head coach on June 17, 2026, one day after trading goaltender Joseph Woll and defenceman Simon Benoit to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Hiller returns with familiar system

Hiller, 57, previously served as an assistant coach with Toronto from 2015 to 2019 during which the club reached the playoffs three times. He replaces Craig Berube after one season behind the bench. Leafs management cited Hiller’s familiarity with the organization’s structure and his ability to implement structured defensive play as key factors in the selection. Hiller had been fired by the Los Angeles Kings earlier in 2026 after three seasons as head coach.

Woll trade creates cap space and assets

On June 16 the Maple Leafs sent Woll and Benoit to Philadelphia in exchange for goaltender Samuel Ersson, defenceman Emil Andrae and a third-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. GM John Chayka stated the deal delivered roster flexibility and young talent while preserving organizational depth at goaltender. Woll had posted a .912 save percentage in 41 games during the 2025-26 season.

Chayka explained that moving Woll allowed the club to acquire a puck-moving defenceman in Andrae and additional draft capital without sacrificing net depth. He added that Hiller’s hiring aligns with the same emphasis on continuity and cost-effective leadership. The combined transactions reduced projected 2026-27 payroll commitments by approximately 4.2 million dollars while adding two players under age 27.

Depth chart shifts immediately

Ersson is expected to compete for the starting role alongside backup options already in the system. Andrae, 22, brings 48 points from 72 AHL games in 2025-26 and is projected to log significant minutes on the third pairing. Hiller’s staff is anticipated to retain several assistants from Berube’s group to maintain practice routines established last season.

Outlook for training camp

The club opens camp with 14 forwards, seven defencemen and three goaltenders under contract. Chayka indicated further roster adjustments remain possible before the October 2026 deadline to reach the 23-man limit. Internal metrics project the new lineup improves five-on-five expected goals by 0.18 per 60 minutes compared with 2025-26 figures.

Chayka’s moves position the Maple Leafs with added draft capital and young talent that could narrow the gap to division rivals by the February 2027 trade deadline.
