His prior 17-goal stint in 57 games with Ottawa in 2023-24 offers a familiar option if he accepts a pay cut from his $4.75 million salary.

Patrik Laine posted 84 goals in 231 games across recent seasons with Columbus and Montreal. Injuries and mental-health issues restricted him to just five games last year and no more than 56 since 2019-20. The upside remains high when healthy, but availability questions create a clear risk-reward calculation for Ottawa’s $4.2–5 million in cap space.

No other pure UFAs match the sniper profile, forcing Staios either to wait or explore trades.

Trade market offers higher-cost alternatives

Brock Boeser recorded 87 goals over the past three seasons and has settled into a consistent 20-goal pace. Vancouver’s rebuild and Ottawa’s remaining draft capital from the Tkachuk deal create a theoretical match, though Boeser’s full no-movement clause requires his approval. Pavel Zacha scored 30 goals last season while Kirill Marchenko added 27, yet both carry varying availability depending on their clubs’ willingness to move them.

Dylan Larkin has cleared 30 goals in each of his last five seasons, but acquiring him would demand far more than Ottawa’s current cap flexibility allows. Delaying action until November or January preserves cap space yet risks missing the window when other teams value those assets less.

Timing shapes competitive trajectory

A mid-season addition could stabilize scoring depth once Eklund and Andre Burakovsky establish chemistry. Waiting also lets the Senators evaluate how their revised top-six performs without a classic finisher. Historical precedents show teams that defer sniper acquisitions often enter the deadline paying a premium in picks and prospects.

Staios must weigh immediate cap commitments against the cost of future assets to decide whether the search concludes this summer or stretches into 2027.
