New general manager Chris MacFarland acquired Jack Drury and Ross Colton to strengthen center depth after the previous regime’s big-ticket signings failed to produce playoffs. The additions lowered the average forward age by two full seasons compared with the 2025 roster. Mavrik Bourque arrived from Dallas in a deal completed to preempt an offer sheet that would have cost Nashville a first-round pick and more.

Ilya Lyubushkin’s signing added a right-shot defender who played 78 games in 2025-26 and posted a plus-12 rating. MacFarland stated explicitly that young players must now earn roster spots rather than receive guaranteed minutes. The four additions replaced older contracts that had consumed more than 22 million dollars in cap space.

The shift contrasts sharply with Barry Trotz’s approach of signing Jonathan Marchessault, Steven Stamkos and Brady Skjei to long-term deals. Those three players combined for 72 points in 2025-26 yet the team missed the playoffs by nine points. MacFarland’s early moves therefore prioritize cost-controlled talent that can grow together through the 2027 season.

Quiet Period Masks Possible Further Trades

Jim Biringer reported on Nashville Sports Radio that the organization remains silent publicly because new consultant Nick Saban has tightened information flow. Despite the quiet, Biringer believes the Predators will attempt to move additional veteran salary to create more flexibility. Jonathan Marchessault enters year three of a five-year 27.5 million dollar contract and carries a full no-movement clause.

The 5.5 million dollar cap hit for Marchessault is viewed internally as movable once the salary cap rises again in 2027. Retaining him would limit the team’s ability to add two more middle-six forwards before free agency opens. Trading him would also accelerate ice time for Bourque and Drury, both of whom posted double-digit goal totals in the AHL or NHL last season.

MacFarland has repeated that veterans will determine the team’s direction, yet the recent acquisitions signal that direction now favors players under 26. Any deal involving Marchessault would likely require retention of salary or a prospect going the other way to balance the books.

Timeline Points to 2027 Window

The Predators now hold seven players aged 25 or younger under contract through 2028. This group includes Bourque, Drury and Colton who together recorded 41 points in 2025-26 across 148 combined games. The remaining cap space after these signings sits at roughly 4.2 million dollars, enough for one more depth piece or to absorb a retained salary in a larger trade.

If the front office executes one additional move before the October 2026 roster freeze, projected 2027 cap flexibility rises above 12 million dollars. That figure would allow Nashville to target two unrestricted free agents rather than relying solely on internal development. The current construction therefore hinges on whether Marchessault and similar contracts are cleared this summer.
