Steve Ott takes the reins as Springfield Thunderbirds head coach

Steve Ott felt the weight of the moment when St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong offered him his first head coaching role. The opportunity came in Edmonton during the 2025-26 season, thrusting the longtime Blues assistant into an unexpected new chapter with the team’s AHL affiliate.

Ott had spent nearly a decade stabilized in the NHL coaching ranks after retiring as a player. He contributed to the Blues’ 2019 Stanley Cup victory and earned promotion to associate coach. Armstrong’s offer to lead the Springfield Thunderbirds on an interim basis marked a pivotal shift.

Before accepting, Ott called his wife, Erica, for her blessing. Armstrong gave him time to consider the move, planning coffee the next morning. Yet excitement overtook him. “I wouldn’t have been able to sleep,” Ott recalled. He phoned Armstrong immediately after speaking with his wife and accepted the position.

On January 19, 2026, the Blues officially named the 43-year-old as Springfield’s coach for the remainder of the season. He replaced Steve Konowalchuk, who had been let go after a season and a half.

A rare midseason transition

Ott became the first coach to leave an NHL staff during the season for an AHL bench boss role since Rick Wamsley took over the Peoria Rivermen in 2009-10. The move highlighted Armstrong’s trust in Ott’s readiness.

“To take this opportunity, ‘Army’ knew it was something that I personally wanted,” Ott said. He viewed the AHL assignment as the missing link in his development: finally leading a team of his own.

“So I cross that off here in the next little while,” Ott noted. Patience remained central to his approach. “I’m not looking just to run away or do that thing to look for that coaching job. I want to be patient and let the opportunity come to me.”

Ott’s 14-year NHL playing career prepared him well. He appeared in 848 games across five teams, including the Dallas Stars, Buffalo Sabres, St. Louis Blues, Detroit Red Wings, and Montreal Canadiens. He served as captain in Buffalo and brought a gritty, agitating style on the ice while maintaining a warm, smiling personality off it.

Building connections in Springfield

Ott’s affable nature quickly resonated with the Thunderbirds roster. Former captain Matthew Peca, traded to Syracuse on March 10, praised the coach’s presence. “I mean, he has a personality, right? And it’s great in the locker room. Light days are fun because he’s involved. But he also has that edge to him that when things need to get done correctly, he’ll say what he needs to say.”

Peca described Ott’s “magnetic kind of energy” as especially valuable for developing younger players. Ott stayed on the ice long after morning skates, such as on February 6 in Rochester, drilling faceoffs with prospects. That work ethic, a hallmark of his playing days, translated directly to his new role.

Ott’s path from agitating forward to respected coach reflects steady progression. He joined the Blues organization as a player in 2013-14 before transitioning to the staff in 2017. His contributions helped shape a Stanley Cup-winning culture that he now aims to instill at the AHL level.

Looking ahead with patience

Ott emphasized steady growth over rushing toward an NHL head coaching position. The Springfield experience serves as valuable seasoning, allowing him to refine his leadership in a developmental setting.

The Thunderbirds benefit from his blend of intensity and approachability. Players respond to a coach who balances fun with accountability, fostering an environment where prospects can thrive.

As the season progressed, Ott’s impact became evident in team dynamics and individual development. His story underscores the value of seizing opportunities when they align with personal goals and organizational needs.

Ott’s measured approach positions him well for future challenges. Whether an NHL bench opens or further AHL success builds his résumé, his focus remains on the present task of developing talent and leading effectively.
