WHL Prepares 2026-27 Schedule and Travel Upgrades

Schedule Decompression and Playoff Format Shift

The league will insert an extra week into the regular-season calendar specifically to eliminate several weekday games. This adjustment directly responds to player and family feedback collected in a league-wide survey. The first round of the playoffs will also shorten from best-of-seven to best-of-five series.

Dan Near emphasized that the core 68-game regular-season structure remains unchanged. The added week creates extra recovery windows without reducing the NHL-mimicking grind that Near still views as a competitive differentiator. Players have begun requesting more in-season weight-gain time, a request absent before the NCAA eligibility shift.

Near noted that the configuration of 19- and 20-year-olds continues to evolve. The league recorded fewer regular 16-year-olds this past season than in prior years, offset by an influx of 17- and 18-year-old American prospects testing major junior before college.

The best-of-five first-round change reduces total playoff games by up to four per series. This trims travel and academic disruption for the youngest roster players while preserving the later rounds in their traditional format.

Air-Travel Option and Competitive Positioning

Beginning next season, each WHL club may replace one bus trip with a chartered flight for an out-of-conference road game. The policy emerged after the same player survey identified the annual interconference journey as the most taxing element of the schedule. Near contrasted this with NCAA programs that routinely offer charter travel.

The change aims to return players to their home markets faster, improving both school attendance and strength-conditioning consistency. Near stated that these incremental advantages matter because prospects now hold greater leverage in choosing their developmental path.

WHL teams produced four of the top-10 selections in the 2026 NHL draft, including overall No. 1 Gavin McKenna. The league also placed 23 of the first 100 picks, underscoring continued high-end output despite the fluid eligibility rules.

Expansion Outlook and Roster Stability

Chilliwack remains on track for a 2027-28 expansion franchise. A second ownership group has submitted a competitive bid after the original applicants reached an impasse on arena terms. The WHL Board of Governors will decide the matter in the coming weeks.

Near reported that the league has never been deeper at the 17- and 18-year-old levels. American prospects previously barred from major junior are now entering the WHL for one or two seasons before NCAA enrollment, sustaining overall roster quality even as some veterans depart early.

The combination of schedule relief, improved travel and a shorter first-round series forms a coherent package intended to keep the WHL the preferred destination for top Canadian and American talent.
