Eight seasons of steady ascent

Wickenheiser joined the organization in the 2018-19 season as assistant director of player development under then-GM Kyle Dubas. She advanced to senior director of player development in 2021-22 before becoming assistant GM responsible for player development starting in 2022-23. These three successive promotions occurred over a four-year span and placed her in charge of the club’s development camp, including oversight of first overall pick Gavin McKenna.

Her final public appearance in the role came at the July 2026 development camp, where she evaluated prospects including McKenna and Tinus-Luc Koblar. The camp concluded one week before her departure announcement.

Divergent expectations after Chayka’s arrival

Chayka took over as GM in May 2026. In conversations held over several days in early July, Wickenheiser stated her expectation that she would continue to have a significant impact. Chayka’s leadership group instead envisioned a different path, leading to the mutual decision to part ways.

Chayka described the move as part of an ongoing evaluation of the organization and emphasized it was not a reflection on the commitment of those affected. Two other assistant GMs, Ryan Hardy and Judd Brackett, remain listed on the team’s hockey operations page.

Olympic pedigree and development legacy

Wickenheiser won four Olympic gold medals and seven World Championship golds with Canada’s national women’s team, plus one Olympic silver. She earned two Olympic MVP honors and induction into both the Hockey Hall of Fame and IIHF Hall of Fame. Those achievements preceded her 2018 hiring as the first woman in a full-time player development role with an NHL club.

Since joining, she oversaw the growth of multiple prospect cohorts and expressed pride in the work of the player development team. Her exit removes a high-profile figure from the front office exactly eight years after her arrival.

Wickenheiser’s Instagram post on July 2, 2026, thanked coaches, management and players while wishing the team the best in the next chapter.
