Akhtyamov Steadies Marlies Run to AHL Final Four

Artur Akhtyamov has allowed no more than three goals in any game during the Marlies’ playoff run that carried them from 15th in the standings to the Final Four.

The 24-year-old goaltender reached North American professional hockey only two years earlier yet seized the lion’s share of postseason starts for Toronto. His performance has kept the Marlies alive through three consecutive series-deciding victories, an AHL record.

Regular-Season Platform

Akhtyamov posted an 18-10-4 record with a 2.86 goals-against average and .904 save percentage across 32 games in the 2025-26 regular season. He went 11-2-2 at home with a 2.51 goals-against average and .917 save percentage, remaining undefeated in regulation at Coca-Cola Coliseum after November 26.

Those numbers built directly on his prior AHL work, where he compiled a 29-18-8 record, 2.84 goals-against average and .903 save percentage in 58 career regular-season appearances before this campaign. The consistency earned him a selection to the 2026 AHL All-Star Classic representing the North Division.

Head coach John Gruden credited Akhtyamov’s size at 6-foot-2 and his ability to battle through scrambles as foundational traits that translated immediately to the higher level.

Playoff Command

Akhtyamov has started the bulk of the Marlies’ postseason games and has yet to surrender more than three goals in any single contest. He was briefly pulled after two periods in one outing against Laval but otherwise maintained command, allowing the club to advance despite entering the playoffs as a 15th-place finisher.

Gruden stated that Akhtyamov has been the reason the team reached its current position and described him as possessing the demeanor of a quarterback who simply moves on after an interception. Teammate Ryan Tverberg added that the netminder’s reliability means the club never worries about his readiness.

Akhtyamov himself noted that he enjoys the intensity of the postseason, calling it the best time for hockey. His prior VHL championship experience with Neftyanik Almetyevsk two seasons earlier produced statistics nearly identical to those he has posted with the Marlies.

Depth and Outlook

The Marlies now face the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, who finished third overall and hold home-ice advantage. Akhtyamov’s presence alongside Dennis Hildeby gives Toronto two goaltenders with clear NHL trajectories at a time when many clubs seek netminding solutions.

Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka, hired on May 3 2026, inherits this depth alongside established options such as Anthony Stolarz and Joseph Woll. Akhtyamov made his NHL debut on December 13 2025, stopping all five shots faced in relief.

The three-year contract extension Akhtyamov signed on March 15 2026, carrying a $900,000 average annual value with a two-way structure in 2026-27 followed by one-way terms, secures his development path inside the organization.
