Family Farm Built Unmatched Work Ethic

Carels grew up on a 500-head cattle farm near Cypress River, Manitoba, where daily chores shaped his physical development from an early age. He is the second youngest of five siblings, all of whom played hockey while contributing to farm operations. His sister Jayden completed her senior season at the University of Jamestown, while younger sister Kendra plays at Pilot Mound Academy.

The outdoor rink installed on family land during the pandemic provided daily competition against siblings, sharpening his skills without organized leagues. Carels has credited this environment for instilling discipline that carried into his WHL career with the Prince George Cougars.

Cougars coach-GM Mark Lamb noted the transformation: Carels arrived listed at 6-foot-1 and 175 pounds to start the 2025-26 season before reaching 194 pounds by mid-winter. Lamb emphasized that the added mass improved Carels’ comfort and poise without sacrificing mobility.

WHL Production and Mentorship Accelerated Development

In his second full WHL season Carels tied for fourth among defensemen with 73 points and reached the finalist stage for WHL defenseman of the year. Prince George advanced to the playoffs for a fifth straight year, extending the franchise’s streak of first-round NHL picks that already included Terik Parascak in 2024 and Joshua Ravensbergen in 2025.

Associate coach Jim Playfair served as a key father figure, teaching defensive positioning and professional habits during Carels’ time away from the farm. Playfair’s own background as a hard-nosed WHL champion defenseman with the Portland Winter Hawks provided direct guidance on competing in high-traffic areas.

Carels finished the regular season as one of the league’s most complete blue-liners, blending offensive production with reliable play in his own zone. Lamb highlighted his confidence without the puck as a distinguishing trait among junior defenders.

Draft Night Choice Reflected Family Priorities

After the scouting combine Carels planned a return to Cypress River for summer chores rather than a large public celebration. He expressed preference for hosting 40 relatives at home over traveling to the draft venue, echoing Brady Martin’s decision the previous year to skip the main event for a private farm gathering.

The Flames selected Carels sixth overall on June 26, 2026, validating the scouting consensus that his physical maturity and two-way skill set warranted a top-10 selection. He is expected to continue developing with the North Dakota Fighting Hawks before turning pro.
