Chayka replaced Brad Treliving, who was fired March 30, and immediately began reshaping the front office by parting ways with two assistant GMs. Rielly, the longest-tenured Leaf at age 32, posted declining production over the prior two seasons, prompting the new regime to review his full no-movement clause. The defenseman remains under contract for four more seasons at a $7.5 million average annual value through 2029-30. Chris Johnston reported that Rielly, previously unwilling to waive the clause, has since softened his stance. Nick Kypreos stated the Maple Leafs are looking into options and Rielly will receive a short list if clubs express interest.

Rielly’s reduced output contrasted sharply with his earlier role as the team’s top-pairing anchor. The 32-year-old logged fewer points per game in each of the last two campaigns while facing increased competition from younger blueliners. Rielly’s preference for a playoff contender narrows potential landing spots to teams such as the Ducks or Jets.
