Larkin’s Record With Detroit

Larkin scored 276 goals in those 808 games while leading or finishing top-three in team scoring in all but his first two seasons. His career high of 34 goals and 79 points came this season, yet the Red Wings finished outside the playoffs for the 10th straight year since his 2015-16 rookie campaign.

The organization posted a league-worst record in 2019-20 and finished in the bottom 10 seven consecutive seasons after the 2015-16 first-round exit in five games. Larkin recorded just one goal in that series.

Late-season collapses in each of the past three seasons left Detroit just outside or briefly inside a playoff spot before fading. GM Steve Yzerman explored adding centers such as Vincent Trocheck and Robert Thomas but completed no deals.

The Role Larkin Could Not Fill

Larkin received Selke Trophy votes only once despite playing the most valuable position on the roster. His numbers fell short of upper-echelon No. 1 center production, a mismatch the front office failed to resolve by reducing his minutes or acquiring complementary talent.

Larkin succeeded at the Olympics and 4 Nations Face-Off precisely because he avoided shutdown matchups and heavy offensive creation duties. On a contending team he would skate alongside players such as Kirill Kaprizov or Matt Boldy, sharing the top line or serving as second-line center behind a superstar.

The presence of Joel Eriksson Ek would further shield Larkin from the toughest defensive assignments at five-on-five. His size, speed, and playoff-ready game would then operate in a system built for success rather than one that required him to drive play alone.

Path Forward For The Captain

Larkin holds a full no-trade clause and will therefore dictate his destination, likely selecting a roster already positioned for deep playoff runs. At 29 he aligns with the age curve of most contenders and would receive the reduced responsibility that has proven effective in international play.

The move ends 11 years of individual production amid organizational stagnation but gives Larkin the environment his skill set requires.
