Brendan Gallagher Charts Path Forward Away From Montreal

Three days after the Montreal Canadiens fell to the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference final, Brendan Gallagher told reporters he will not be back with the team next season.

A veteran’s final chapter in Montreal

Gallagher played only three of Montreal’s 19 playoff games this spring. In the regular season he averaged a career-worst 12:21 of ice time. Coach Martin St-Louis allocated the bulk of minutes to younger players, a decision that left the 34-year-old forward as a healthy scratch for long stretches.

The winger recorded 21 goals in 82 games during 2024-25. That total stood well below the 33 goals he posted in 82 games in 2018-19. Gallagher acknowledged the shift himself when he said there was still more in the tank but recognized that Montreal had moved on.

Gallagher enters the final year of his contract. If no trade or mutual termination occurs, he faces the prospect of another season on the outside looking in. The Canadiens can instead buy out that final year, saving $2,666,667 against the cap in 2026-27 while carrying a $1,333,333 charge in 2027-28.

Vancouver emerges as logical landing spot

Gallagher was born in Alberta yet considers Vancouver home. He singled out the Canucks organization as a place where he could continue his career. The city’s proximity to his personal life aligns with a team entering a rebuild phase that values dressing-room culture.

Vancouver’s young core, including center Elias Pettersson, could benefit from the presence of a player with 911 regular-season games and 79 playoff games of experience. Gallagher’s willingness to set a professional tone offers a low-cost way for the Canucks to instill habits during their rebuild window.

Any deal would likely require Montreal to retain a portion of salary. The return could be modest, yet the move would still accelerate the Canadiens’ shift toward prospects who already occupy the majority of roster spots.

Lasting value beyond scoring totals

Gallagher no longer projects as a 30-goal scorer. He retains the ability to contribute on a depth line that receives sheltered minutes and power-play opportunities. A resurgence in ice time on a rebuilding club could restore trade value by the following deadline.

The Canadiens have already signaled their direction by prioritizing younger players throughout 2025-26. Gallagher’s exit removes one more veteran salary and clears additional cap space for future extensions or acquisitions.

Gallagher leaves Montreal without a Stanley Cup. He departs with the respect earned over more than a decade of service and the knowledge that another chapter remains available for a team willing to value his experience.
